چکیده

Interpretation of SAR images in areas with significant relief requires rigorous calibration considering local illuminated area and incidence angle effects if one is to be able to perform meaningful multitemporal analysis using images acquired with different geometries and/or sensors. Given the large swaths made available by RADARSAT, even comparison of the near vs. far range sections of the same image requires such calibration. We present here results from geometric and radiometric calibration of single beam mode RADARSAT SAR images, as applied to data provided under the Application Development and Research Opportunity (ADRO) programme. A high resolution elevation model is used first to terrain-geocode the data from ground range radar coordinates into the reference map coordinate system. Tiepoints are used to coregister both the slow and fasttime axes to a global Earth-centred rotating coordinate system. Radiometric calibration is performed by compensating for effects of local illuminated area and incidence angle on the local backscatter. In particular, the effects of multiple DEM slopes (“facets”) within a single radar geometry pixel (which can grow to over a kilometre in steep terrain!) are considered. The utility of the SAR data for thematic interpretation is presented, both before and after calibration.

Calibration of the RADARSAT SWB Processor at the Alaska SAR Facility

Calibration of the RADARSAT ScanSAR Wide B (SWB) processor at the Alaska SAR Facility (ASF) was completed at the end of 1998, making ASF one of the world’s first synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing facilities to distribute calibrated ScanSAR data to its users. SWB is one of several imaging modes onboard Canada’s RADARSAT Cband SAR satellite. In the SWB beam-mode, wide-swath coverage of 45...

Assessment of the Asar Sensor Radiometric Quality in Comparison to Ers-2 and Radarsat-1 Sar Data

The estimation of geophysical parameters from SAR data necessitates well calibrated sensors with good radiometric precision. In this paper, the radiometric calibration of ASAR/ENVISAT sensor was assessed by comparing ASAR data with ERS-2 and RADARSAT-1 SAR data. With regard to recent data, acquired at the end of 2005, the difference varies from -0.72dB to +0.72dB, with temporal variations that ...

Hierarchical Bayesian Data Analysis in Radiometric SAR System Calibration: A Case Study on Transponder Calibration with RADARSAT-2 Data

A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system requires external absolute calibration so that radiometric measurements can be exploited in numerous scientific and commercial applications. Besides estimating a calibration factor, metrological standards also demand the derivation of a respective calibration uncertainty. This uncertainty is currently not systematically determined. Here for the first time...

Geometric Calibration and Radiometric Correction of LiDAR Data and Their Impact on the Quality of Derived Products

LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) systems are capable of providing 3D positional and spectral information (in the utilized spectrum range) of the mapped surface. Due to systematic errors in the system parameters and measurements, LiDAR systems require geometric calibration and radiometric correction of the intensity data in order to maximize the benefit from the collected positional and spect...

Effect of Spectral Change Width in Radiometric Normalization of Multitemporal Satellite Imagery Methodes Efficiency

Multitemporal satellite optical images of the same terrain are very applicable in monitoring and quantifying large scale land cover change over time. These images are confounded in terms of radiometric consistency due to differences in sensor calibration parameters, illumination, geometric condition and variation in atmospheric effects. To analyze these images, it is necessary to omit mentioned...
